My name is Laelia Watt and I am the artist behind Poplolly Studio. Besides thinking the word sounded playful, I chose poplolly, because it means “little darling” which I thought fitting for artwork created to inspire the child at heart in all of us. Throughout my life, I enjoyed working with a multitude of mediums, but always gravitated to paper crafts. When I created my first piece with only tissue paper and acrylic paint, I was hooked. The collage process was therapeutic while also allowing me to have fun adding details in acrylic paint.

The whimsical ideas I explore in my art align with my penchant for storytelling. My degree from the University of Arizona is in Creative Writing, and I have always wanted to create children’s books. Stories, words, and turns of phrase inspire my work. When I am working, I am amused to create a vignette that seems to drop the viewer into the middle of a scene. It delights me to hear when people of all ages are inspired to imagine a story of their own or feel a connection to one of the animal characters.
